Precision Shaving

– Men’s Grooming Guide

Shaving is, undoubtedly, an integral part of every gentleman’s grooming routine. The process of shaving is much more than simply putting a razor on the face. Apart from helping you maintain that perfect thin moustache, perpendicular sideburns, and Newgate fringe, shaving also plays a crucial role in ensuring a healthy-looking skin.

Though you may have developed your own shaving routine, daily troubles like razor burn, irritation, and cuts can be easily avoided with the perfect preparation. For precision shaving, you can put the modern-day razors aside and pick a single blade tool.

Let’s take a look at the multiple steps for precision shaving:

1. Prepare Your Face and Beard

  • An ideal way to soften the beard is to take a shower or take a towel and soak it in warm water. You can then rinse off the excess water and place the towel on your face for a few seconds. The steam will help to soften the beard and also aid in relaxing the pores of the skin.
  • Make use of a pre-shave lotion as it not only softens the beard but also acts as a protectant against skin irritation.
  • The next step is to apply a shaving cream. All you need to do is dab out a small amount of cream in a shaving bowl or place it in one hand. You can then use your shaving brush to whip the cream and get a foamy lather. Use the shaving brush to smear your face with the lather.

2. Follow a Proper Shaving Technique

It is true that our faces are not flawless. There are multiple imperfections that need to be taken care of. Therefore, while using a razor, try to put firm pressure, albeit gently. If you plan to use a single blade razor, try and use it in three distinct steps:

  • Go for long and steady strokes to shave off the hair. It is true that hair grows in different patterns for each individual. One blade razors are heavy and can be used to your advantage. You can simply glide it along the grain of your hair and let the heaviness of the tool do the work.
  • In the second step, reapply the shaving cream and use the razor on it. This time, however, make sure that the strokes are shorter but go along with the grain of your hair. This step is taken for a clean shave and to get rid of any hair that might have remained after the first step.
  • In the final step, reapply the shaving cream and glide the razor against the grain of the hair. This is indeed the last step in achieving a close shave. Though you may feel some pulling, it will, however, be minimal at this stage of the entire shaving process.

3. Restore Your Skin

This is definitely one of the most significant steps in the entire shaving process. Though shaving creams help razors to glide smoothly, they may also leave the skin irritated and dry. Hence, use a moisturiser or an after-shave lotion to rejuvenate your skin post shaving.
