Copal

In perfumery, copal is an aromatic resin obtained from various trees, particularly species within the Bursera genus. It has been used for thousands of years in Central and South American ceremonies, but in recent years it has become a popular and exclusive fragrance note in perfumery.

Copal is often described as “the incense of the earth” and has a fresh, smoky and slightly sweet aroma. Its scent profile can be compared to a blend of fresh pine needles and citrus, balsamic resinous tones, and a lighter, fresher interpretation of olibanum (church incense).

As a resin, copal is primarily used as a base note or heart note in fragrances. It provides a deep, mysterious and earthy foundation that helps the fragrance last longer on the skin.
