Black Afgano by Nasomatto is not merely a fragrance with strong appeal; it is an experience of depth and complexity, offering a distinctive rawness that is difficult to define. According to the perfumer himself, Alessandro Gualtieri, Black Afgano is meant to evoke the scent of "Luxury prostitution and the finest cannabis on the market".
A bold statement, but there is certainly truth to it. It is a daring fragrance for those who want to leave a lasting impression and create memorable encounters. Upon its release in 2009, it was immediately praised as unique and is today considered Gualtieri’s breakthrough and one of the great classics in niche perfumery.
Although Alessandro Gualtieri never reveals the notes in his fragrances, the fragrance experts at Gents are fairly certain that the top notes include dry liquorice powder and a herbal spirit reminiscent of classic Underberg. The composition carries a rough, astringent edge (derived from its herbal facets), yet in its depth there is also a subtle sweetness, likely from pomegranate similar to that found in Gajol drinks. We also detect hints of oud and saffron, which lend the fragrance a woody and spicy dynamic in the base, contrasting the sweetness. Whether the perfume actually contains hashish, as the perfumer himself suggests, is debatable, but a certain cannabis-like nuance can indeed be perceived, leaning towards green and liquorice-like tones.

Received this as a tester first and was completely enchanted. Like a previous writer, I couldn't stop sniffing myself. And now to the bottle, which was not at all close to the tester. Apparently, this should develop like a fine (wine)? Unfortunately, I haven't noticed that, so sadly a low rating.

Tried samples of this and immediately went for a full bottle. Dark, complex, and absolutely superb. Incredibly cost-effective as one spray can last two days. It is quite potent and lasts a long time. What bothers me is that the opening is a bit special and not at all 100%. It gets better the longer it stays on the skin, and after the dry down, there’s nothing that beats it, so it still gets a 5/5. I can’t stop smelling myself.

If dark matter had a scent, it would be this!! I can't find words to describe how good, complex, masculine, powerful, and dark it is. Patric further down wrote that it is “30ml of pure narcissism” and I completely agree, an incredible confidence boost because you know you have the best scent in the room!
