Many of us can relate to the need for a little warmth and comfort when autumn arrives. So why not indulge in a touch of warm luxury with a perfume that suits the season? Autumn fragrances don't have to be all about moss, spices and woods – creaminess, sweetness and a little decadent "booziness" can be just as irresistible in the autumn darkness. Here we present a selection of autumn perfumes that use rum as a recurring fragrance note.

Summary

  • The article highlights how fragrance notes such as woods, spices and aromatic elements create warm, complex autumn profiles that feel both inviting and full of character.

  • By adding twists of incense, rum or other unexpected aromas, classic autumn perfumes gain an extra dimension and personality.

  • Balancing deeper base notes with fresher top and heart notes makes these fragrances versatile enough for everything from everyday wear to special occasions throughout autumn.

Xerjoff – Tony Iommi Monkey Special

This now well-established standout from Italian house Xerjoff – a collaboration between Black Sabbath's legendary guitarist Tony Iommi and brand founder Sergio Momo – has already received a follow-up in the form of the darker, leather-based Tony Iommi Deified. Here, however, we're highlighting the debut fragrance, which makes quite an impression with its warm combination of boozy rum, caramel and leather – a combination that almost ventures into whisky territory. It's a gourmand that is both macho in true heavy metal fashion and, at the same time, cosily warming and elegant. If the autumn darkness leaves you feeling tired, this punch of a fragrance will definitely wake you up.

Nasomatto – Baraonda

When talking about boozy creations, it's hard to overlook Nasomatto's vanilla-sweet spirit bomb Baraonda, which opens with subdued rum and bourbon before developing in the drydown into a soft gourmand centred around creamy vanilla. As usual with Italian perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri, this is not something to overspray – the concentration is high, but not in a way that unpleasantly attacks those around you, as you might initially expect. On the contrary, the composition settles beautifully and smoothly onto the skin.

Baraonda is said to contain oud, which is the only note Alessandro has revealed, but it isn't particularly prominent. Instead, piquant alcohol and warm vanilla take centre stage – ingredients that make it perfect for chilly autumn days.

Les Indemodables – Vanille Havane Edp

Vanille Havane is probably French house Les Indemodables' most successful and sought-after creation, and it's not difficult to understand why. This is a gourmand distinguished by its beautifully balanced ingredients and pure oils. Here too, we encounter a decadent, boozy note of rum, accompanied in the opening by Madagascar vanilla before moving through cocoa, dried fruit – which adds warm aromatic nuances – and leather, only to transform quite unexpectedly into a pure tobacco fragrance in the final stages. A curious twist in itself. Wonderful as an accessory throughout the winter season or for evenings all year round, but particularly appealing when the autumn darkness begins to close in.

Plume Impression – Royal Bourbon

It's easy to forget just how much rum can add a luxurious and elegant twist to a gourmand perfume. In Plume Impression's Royal Bourbon, it couldn't be clearer. The brand is known for its elegant unisex fragrances, which often feel dressed-up and sophisticated, and that character remains even when, as in this case, it ventures into gourmand territory. It doesn't get much more black tie and evening gown than this. Creamy, boozy and like a piece of jewellery on the skin.

QOT – An Affair

Question of Time has quickly attracted attention for its distinctive compositions and diversity. Its range spans everything from fresh, marine-inspired fragrances to fruity and truly edible gourmands. An Affair is a more balanced gourmand, where Italian panettone is beautifully balanced by rum and cardamom. Perfect for anyone who doesn't want to smell like an entire bakery but still wants an alluring sense of rum and sweetness combined with spices to provide warmth in the autumn darkness.
