beard shampoo

Best in test

Beard shampoo has become an increasingly essential addition to the bathroom for bearded men. It provides more hydration than regular facial cleansers and is far gentler on the skin than hair shampoo, which is not designed for facial hair. Gents has tested five different brands and selected our favourites.

#1 Benjamin barber
beard shampoo black oak

Motivation: Benjamin Barber Beard Shampoo Black Oak takes first place thanks to its excellent value and superior moisturising properties. It lathers extremely well, and the slightly thicker consistency – similar to the brand’s beard oil – allows it to penetrate even thick and coarse beards.

The Black Oak scent is a true standout – fresh, masculine and well-balanced. For an even softer result, the same scent is available in a conditioner. Both products now come in pump bottles, which is a welcome upgrade.

#2 sailor's beard shampoo antarctica

Motivation: A rich, lathering shampoo from Sailor's with a cool, refreshing scent of mint, citrus and eucalyptus. Nourishing ingredients enhance the experience, and pairing it with the matching beard oil creates a complete grooming routine.

Also available as a complementary conditioner for extra softness.

#3 proraso beard shampoo

Motivation: For gentle and effective cleansing, Proraso delivers. This classic Italian brand has successfully expanded into beard care with a slightly lighter formula.

Their scents are also available in matching oils and balms. Azur & Lime offers a fresh citrus profile with hints of mint, while Cypress & Vetiver provides a more woody alternative. Extra points for the pump bottle and attractive price.

#4 dr k soap company beard soap

Motivation: A strong fourth place goes to Irish brand Dr K, whose beard shampoo is packed with nourishing ingredients such as vitamin B5. It excels at reducing itch and irritation while leaving the beard exceptionally soft.

The scents are relatively bold, though the original version offers a pleasant, slightly cooling citrus note. A minor drawback is the lack of a pump, though the smaller 100 ml size is ideal for travel.

#5 mr bear beard wash

Motivation: Close behind Dr K is Swedish brand Mr Bear Family. Their beard shampoo features anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe irritated skin. It lathers well, moisturises effectively and is available in three scents.

The fragrances are noticeable but not overpowering. Woodland is the most traditionally masculine, while Wilderness is also popular. A pump bottle is appreciated, though the 250 ml size can be less practical for travel.
