beard wax

Best in test

If you have trouble keeping your beard in shape, a beard wax is a practical and effective solution. But which ones are easiest to work with and how strong is the hold? Here, Gents tests a selection of waxes from the assortment – we have chosen to exclude beard balms and instead focus on pure beard waxes or styling creams, as balms mainly have a moisturising function.

Summary

  • Beard wax is used to shape and keep the beard in place and is especially useful when beard hairs are difficult to style or require extra hold.

  • Gents’ test panel compared several beard waxes in the assortment and evaluated them based on hold, ease of application and fragrance profile.

  • Sailor’s Soft Beard Wax takes first place thanks to its creamy formula that is easy to apply while providing strong hold that helps the beard maintain its shape.

winner:
sailor's soft beard wax

Motivation: In first place we find Sailor's Soft Beard Wax, and for several reasons. The main reason is its easy-to-work creamy formula that does not require warming and does not create clumps during application – particularly desirable when applying it to a larger beard and wider areas.

Sailor's wax is not alone in this category, there are several cream waxes on the market, but what makes this one unique is that it hardens after brief exposure to oxygen, which truly helps the beard retain its shape.

As a cream wax it is virtually unmatched in terms of hold, which is why it takes the top position. The fact that it is fragrance-free is also a major advantage for those who are sensitive to scents or who use beard oils with distinctive fragrances.

#2
BENJAMIN BARBER BEARD WAX - LIGHT HOLD

Motivation: For those looking for a wax with a firmer beeswax feel, Benjamin Barber is an excellent choice. It is best suited for smaller beard areas since its consistency requires a bit more warming and working between the hands, though it is still softer than the brand’s very hard moustache wax.

The hold is optimal and perfectly balanced – ideal for those who do not have a large beard but still want to refine the shape. The masculine yet discreet scent of the popular Black Oak is also pleasant and easy to wear without overpowering other fragrances.

#3
raw naturals beard styling cream

Motivation: Raw Naturals Brewing Company is a sub-brand of Swedish Recipe For Men, where not only the ingredients but also the manufacturing process and packaging follow a more natural and eco-friendly philosophy.

This cream wax, unlike Sailor's, also provides moisturising benefits thanks to softening shea butter as well as nourishing hop and cactus extracts. There is certainly nothing lacking in terms of ingredients or quality.

The styling cream provides decent hold and a medium shine effect. However, for those primarily focused on maximum hold and styling support – where moisturising is secondary – Sailor's might be the better option. For those seeking both styling and care, Raw Naturals is an excellent choice.

#4
tabac beard wax

Motivation: Next we come to this classic product from the retro brand Tabac. Its appeal naturally lies in whether you appreciate its spicy, floral and soapy old-school fragrance from 1959, composed of tobacco, vanilla, lavender, bergamot and oakmoss.

With this one you hardly need a fragrance at all, so those sensitive to scents should be aware. However, it hardly gets more masculine and classic than this, even if the younger generation might find it a bit challenging.

The cream wax otherwise offers a solid level of hold and performs its job well. Not nearly as economical as Sailor's, but as a styling product it remains an excellent choice. Rock on!

#5
MR BEAR moustache wax

Motivation: In fifth place we choose a reliable and classic moustache wax from Swedish Mr. Bear Family, a handmade product made from 100% natural ingredients that provides solid hold.

The wax comes in three different scents: Woodland, reminiscent of a coniferous forest, Citrus, with the scent of freshly picked citrus fruits, and Wilderness, which offers green notes with a woody base.

This wax suits those looking for a firm product to create different moustache styles. Regardless of hair quality or structure, you can hardly go wrong with this brand, which feels masculine and traditional with its lumberjack-inspired profile.

The wax is also available in an original version without a specific fragrance profile.
