Summary

  • Dandruff is most often caused by a yeast fungus and requires active treatment with the right type of dandruff shampoo.

  • The most effective results come from alternating between several dandruff shampoos and using them only during acute phases.

  • Complementary products such as conditioners and serums can soothe the scalp and enhance the effect of dandruff shampoos.

Dandruff is caused by a yeast-like fungus, pityrosporum ovale, which more than 20 percent of the population experiences at some point. Dandruff shampoos contain an active ingredient, selenium sulfide, which counteracts the activity of this yeast in the scalp. Our best recommendation for dandruff is therefore to use a dandruff shampoo.

A useful tip is to alternate between different dandruff shampoos, since both hair and scalp can sometimes develop a type of tolerance to a product that is used daily over a long period. You should also use dandruff shampoos only for a limited period – that is, during the most acute phase. This type of shampoo can sometimes roughen the hair if used long term, which is why it is better to switch back to a regular shampoo as soon as the desired result is reached.

To further enhance the effect of your dandruff shampoo, we recommend using it together with Power’s latest conditioner. The conditioner has a triple-action formula which, together with Power’s shampoo, creates a complete duo that supports normal hair growth while soothing the scalp and helping keep it free from dandruff and irritation. You can also complement your routine with Scalp Serum, which can further improve the condition of an irritated scalp. This serum is designed to relieve itching, reduce dandruff and its symptoms, and calm and balance a sensitive scalp.

If dandruff persists despite using dandruff shampoo and scalp serum, there are stronger prescription creams and shampoos available that help reduce the inflammation that leads to dandruff. There are also over-the-counter hydrocortisone solutions — ask for these at the pharmacy.
