Dandruff

Many people suffer from a flaky and itchy scalp. This could be a sign of dry scalp or dandruff.

Dandruff is caused by a yeast-like fungus, pityrosporon ovale, which over 20 % of the population is bothered with at some time. Dandruff shampoo contains a substance, selenium sulphide, which counteracts the yeast fungus's activity on the scalp. Our best advice for dandruff is therefore to use an anti-dandruff shampoo.

One tip is however to change between several different dandruff shampoos since both the hair and the scalp sometimes build up a immunity against a shampoo that is used daily over a long period. You should in addition only use dandruff shampoo during a limited time, during the most acute dandruff period. This type of shampoo can sometimes "roughen up" the hair to an undesired point with long-time use, which is why it is better to return to a regular shampoo as soon as you have gotten the desired result.

If despite the dandruff shampoo you still have the fungus, there are stronger, prescription creams and shampoos that alleviate the inflammation that leads to dandruff. There are also prescription-free hydrocortisone solutions to be had, ask for these at the pharmacy.
