Donatien-Alphonse-François was born in Paris in 1740. The name may not say much, but if one says instead Marquis de Sade - a name that has gone to history as the personification of hedonism and the term "sadism" - it will ring a bell in most. The Perfume 1740 from Histoires de Parfums is, in short, a tribute to this controversial scandalous philosopher, author and explorer of man's dark sexual urges.
It is a charismatic and seductive scent created for the modern and male adventurer, where leather and wormwood davana are key ingredients. Davana (which by the way has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac) is already found in the top note with bergamot, but the heart note consists of a wonderfully spicy mix of patchouli, coriander and cardamom. The bass note contains woody elements from cedar and birch along with labdanum, vanilla, elemi and - not entirely unexpected - leather!
