While so-called "niche perfumes" have been gaining in popularity lately and to some extent finding their way onto some commercial perfume shelves, there are those brands within the niche category that will always be extra rare and play in their own league in terms of quality, luxury and availability. Original creations that offer a completely different experience and are only sold by a few. We at Gents are proud to be part of the exclusive group of retailers who sell such unique perfume houses in our range, and who do so with genuine passion, knowledge and long experience.

ROJA - BRITISH FLAIR

Speaking of luxury, nothing beats the English brand Roja Parfums, with fragrance genius Roja Dove - whose 20-year background as a perfumer at the prestigious Guerlain is a merit in itself - as its creative star. When he introduced his perfumery at Harrods in London, he became their most successful installation. From packaging to content, everything at Roja is characterised by refinement, elegance and the highest quality ingredients.

There are scents for all tastes, ranging from subtle and classic masterpieces to heavy, exotic scents (often with a high content of pure oudoil) such as the dark and powerful Aoud and Amber Aoud. The big seller is without a doubt the fresh and classic Elysium Cologne, which Gents sold out in the first hour when we launched the brand in Sweden. And don't forget: Roja Parfums' range also includes a large arsenal of women's fragrances that complement the male lines.

The design is also an important part of Roja's luxury image; on the more expensive and concentrated perfumes, the bottles are adorned with corks set with precious stones. The most exclusive is undoubtedly Haute Luxe with its price tag of 33,000 SEK. This is Roja Dove's own fragrance, originally created for himself and which took several years to be released to the world. The availability is limited edition, to say the least: only 250 bottles are produced each year to mark Roja's birthday. The scent is a rich Chypré, based on the finest raw materials, the cork adorned with 14 purple Swarovski crystals and the bottle filled with flakes of 24-carat gold leaf. Some say that wearing a Roja fragrance is like wearing a Rolex - that says a lot about these very special creations, considered among the finest in the fragrance world. Not to mention the feeling of wearing something most people only dream about.

ITALIAN PROFUMUM ROMA
- A 'PURE' EXPERIENCE

One of the perfume brands we are most proud to be associated with is Profumum Roma (which uses the classic Latin way of writing U, that is, as a V) - created by the Durante family from Sant'Elena Sannita in southern Italy, a town known for its skilled knife sharpeners. Around the time of the Second World War, they left their hometown to cycle to Rome, where they quickly became a popular fixture on the cityscape, selling their handmade shaving products, soap and colognes virtually off the shelf before setting up their own shop.

In 1996, the younger generation of Durante took the step of producing their own perfumes in the niche market, all of which are so pure and special in their notes that they become almost a pure nature experience to explore, while at the same time wanting to convey an "essence" of Rome's culture in the fragrances. The concentration is about 40 per cent pure perfume oil, which means that you really feel that the perfumes have a story to tell, each note gives an association to a place or situation. The musky Thundra, for example, conveys the feeling of being in a forest in autumn, with decaying leaves and mushrooms, while Arso is a pure explosion of wood notes - for those who love wood, there is hardly anything more authentic.

Profumu Roma are also known for their well-balanced sweet fragrances of a feminine nature, with the almond and vanilla flavoured Confetto and the romantic Acqua e Zuccero taking centre stage. But perhaps most amazingly, they have managed to create the world's most powerful - and purest - citrus perfume, Acqua Viva - which practically survives a shower and stays with you all day. It contains only Amalfi lemon and cedar, but because the result is similar to orange or bitter orange peel, it creates a warming feeling on a winter day as well as being magically fresh in summer with its explosive citrus.

The Durante family has always had an inbuilt aversion to commercialism in their blood and this has also characterized their restrictive brand philosophy with few selected retailers - their perfumes are virtually impossible to find online and this also makes them particularly special to both sell and wear.

DI SER - JAPANESE CURIOSITY

Japan may not be the country most commonly associated with perfumes, but one of the world's rarest and most exclusive brands actually comes from Sapporo - DI SER - and Gents is one of only four retailers in the world selling their creations. DI SER is also based on pure products, with ingredients sourced locally from the island of Hokkaido along with the highest quality external raw materials, making them feel quintessentially Japanese - both in fragrance style and in their stylish, clean packaging.

The perfume brand started in 1999 with perfumer Yasuyuki Shinohara as the creator of the most distinctive fragrances, inspired by Japanese philosophy, nature mysticism and millennial tradition. The manufacturing process, using vegetable alcohol and water and carefully adding the ingredients one by one, is just as meticulous in its accuracy and sensitivity as one would expect from Japanese craftsmanship. Spirit and matter in a magical combo. There are fresh and natural-romantic creations like the gentle Akanesasu and Mizu, the latter based on the local, slightly bitter citrus fruit yuzu and vetiver. However, DI SER is particularly known for its oud-based fragrances; the highly original and animalistic Hasunoito - considered one of the most interesting compositions in the perfume world - starts with a strong note of warm hay and earth and after a few hours changes character to planed wood, lotus flower, violet leaf and jasmine.

Probably the most sought-after is Kyara, based on a variety of oud from Indonesia that is so rare that it is virtually extinct. DI SER has a small stock of the raw material, which means that every time they extract essence from kyaran they are taking a risk, as supply is extremely limited. No wonder it is one of the most expensive and obscure oud perfumes in the world - a powerful oud that is warm and embracing in its notes of patchouli wood, Indian sandalwood and rose. Kyaran's status as a curiosity is also reflected in the price and it doesn't get more exclusive and quirky than that - something for real connoisseurs. But it's worth it!

WIDIAN - FRENCH-ORIENTAL LUXURY

Gents is proud to present Widian (formerly AJ Arabia), a perfumery founded in 2014 in Abu Dhabi, the cultural, urban centre of the United Arab Emirates, by Ali Aljaberi in collaboration with perfumer Jean-Claude Astier. Widian's eclectic perfumes are rooted in the design and traditions of Arabic culture, as evidenced by the beautiful presentations inspired by the architectural language of Arabia - the elegant bottles, for example, are inspired by the iconic Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. By combining oriental scent language and its special blend of ingredients with French modern perfumery, they have created exclusive urban creations that describe a scent journey where East meets West.

The perfumes are divided into different thematic collections - in particular, the original Black Collection (a series of five soft and elegant compositions with a restrained scent language) and Sapphire (a cosmopolitan, characterful and spicy tribute to the world's major cities such as London and New York with a leather base), as well as the Velvet and floral Rose Arabia series (the latter as a separate brand with its own design). In collaboration with Expo 2020 in Dubai, the Gold series has also been transformed into a special limited edition designed specifically for this major international event. Widian's perfume house aims to transcend barriers between genders, people and cultures and lives by a single motto - "If you like it, wear it".
