Abu Dhabi stands as a symbol of the cultural center of the United Arab Emirates, where traditional Arabian craftsmanship exists in symbiosis with modern Western influences. It is a metropolis where East meets West, present meets past. This crossover is also reflected in the philosophy of the local perfume house Widian (formerly AJ Arabia), founded by perfumer and entrepreneur Ali Aljaberi in collaboration with French perfumer Jean-Claude Astier and with contributions from creators such as Jordi Fernández. Aljaberi began experimenting with fragrances for personal use early on, until after four years of research and dedication he decided to launch his own brand – AJ Arabia – aiming to create perfumes based on his personal experiences, expressed through thematically structured collections.

The first fragrance was launched in 2014, but a few years later the brand was renamed. Aljaberi wanted a name with broader commercial appeal while retaining local linguistic roots – and Widian was born. The result is a fragrance house where French and international influences are clearly present, yet never overshadow the distinctive Arabian identity. The oriental thread runs throughout all collections, taking us on journeys along the Silk Road – the ancient trade route connecting the mystical East with the modern urban West.

Widian may be a French-oriental fusion, but for Aljaberi the oriental foundation remains essential. The brand’s design and presentation clearly belong to the East, drawing inspiration from Arabian architecture and aesthetics – the elegant bottles, for example, are inspired by the iconic Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Widian’s creations are not only geographical journeys but also olfactory travels through time and space, between old and new. There is also a strong ambition to transcend boundaries – cultural as well as gender-based. “If you like it, wear it” is the philosophy. In other words, if you love a fragrance, it is yours regardless of gender.

Widian’s French-oriental perfumes blend exotic Arabian notes with floral and fruity influences from around the world, divided into distinct collections.
Black Collection – numbered I–V – represents Widian’s core idea: a journey between East and West along the Silk Road, following the sun westward. Each fragrance symbolizes encounters, moments and memories along the way.

The original Black I, like most of the collection, is more restrained and fresh compared to other offerings, with soft, subtle compositions suited for many. As the numbers increase, the fragrances generally become warmer and fuller. A more expressive yet still fresh example is Black IV, which takes us to a market in southern France filled with ripe fruit and floral bouquets, enhanced by leather, vanilla, musk and woody notes.

Gold Collection offers greater intensity with notes of oud and amber, creating a spicier and more robust profile. Gold I was originally launched in 2016, later discontinued, and reintroduced as a limited edition named Al Wasl for Expo 2020. It is a powerful oud-based fragrance with oriental and animalic nuances. Gold II is now Gold II Sahara, centered around saffron.

Velvet Collection is a soft, fruity and floral aromatic line with clear unisex appeal. Liwa is inspired by the oasis of the same name, blending saffron, sweetness and white florals. Hili references an archaeological site and features notes like bergamot, pink pepper, cinnamon, jasmine and tuberose.

Sapphire Collection pays tribute to major global cities. London is dark and smoky, evoking leather, incense and raspberry. Aswan offers a lighter fruit-forward alternative, while New York reflects a multicultural blend with green, sweet and oriental notes. A 2024 release, Granada, is a fresh citrus-woody interpretation of Spain.

Widian’s sister brand Rose Arabia explores floral unisex fragrances centered on the rose. Almond introduces a woody sweetness, while Taifi combines Damask rose with orange and oud. Arabia Rose Lily pairs rose with lily of the valley.

Overall, the Rose Arabia line offers fresh yet complex compositions that appeal even to those who typically avoid florals, embodying Widian’s mission to challenge conventions.
