During the 19th century in Belgium, stones were collected from fields and farms and were used
to sharpen knives, razor blades, scissors and axes. When Belgian Denise Burton-Walrant lost
her husband during the same period, she decided to start a business with the purpose of selling
these stones.

During the 20th century the business reached Germany, France, Italy and
England and it became a big success. Today Maurice Celis, the founder of Ardennes Coticule,
has taken over the company. Celis holds to the same values as Denise Burton-Walrant, and the
company creates grindstones that are unsurpassed in quality, and an essential step in the
sequence which results in the perfect shave.
